Subject Files 1962-1987.

The files were collected by John M. Mangum. Mangum served under several titles as staff involved with planning for the Board of World Missions of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) from 1963-1972 and director for planning of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the LCA from 1972-1987. Mangum also served as editor of the DWME publication World Encounter from 1963-1972. Box 1 contains a file for each of several staff members, and is filed alphabetically by name. The majority of these were staff for the DWME. Box 2 contains files that indicate the relationship of the DWME to other divisions and offices within the LCA. These include the Division for Missions in North America, Division for Parish Services, Division for Professional Leadership, Office for Administration and Finance, Office of the Bishop, and Office of the Secretary. Boxes 3 and 4 contain files for Management Committee meetings. The Management Committee was the elected governing body of the DWME (see LCA 28/1/1). The committee met twice a year. These files contain Mangum's reports and exhibits related to mission and ecumenical planning that were presented to the Management Committee. They are arranged chronologically. There is also a file of Mangum's correspondence with the committee. The remainder of the files are arranged alphabetically; most cover the ecumenical aspect of the DWME planning. There are files on the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Lutheran World Ministries, Lutheran World Relief, National Council of Churches of Christ USA, World Association for Christian Communication, World Council of Churches (WCC), World Hunger, and the World Hunger Staff Team. The latter was a team made up of members from several units of the LCA, with some cooperation with other Lutheran church bodies. Mangum served as LCA liaison to the LWF and WCC. Also included is a section of files on the Radio Voice of the Gospel, to which Mangum related as a member of the LWF Broadcasting Service.
